NC State Predictions: Greg Says 9-3 - Tuffy Talk Live

Three of us went on the record before the season and came out with three different numbers. Layton has NC State at 10-2. Greg has them 9-3. Ethan has them 8-4. And Greg is the only one of the three who does not have the Wolfpack losing at Virginia on Saturday.

His reasoning on Vanderbilt is the part worth hearing. By his count NC State is 1-6 all time against SEC opponents under Dave Doeren, and the only win came against Vanderbilt in a bowl game. He also reports the Vanderbilt return game has come off the future schedule, which has not been reported anywhere else.

Ethan's Stat Pack argues last year's Virginia game was CJ Bailey's best in two seasons. 16 of 23 for 200 yards, a touchdown, no interceptions, 8.7 yards per attempt against a top 20 defense. And the number nobody remembers: Virginia converted 13 of 19 third downs, NC State converted 1 of 7, and the Wolfpack won anyway.

First of all one piece of news which I would just want to kind of hit on here real quick is it has been officially announced that K Tron Evans is eligible quote unquote now to and through date of the Court's ruling on the Mermotion for preliminary injunction here which here's my thing Greg It's just like why why why do we still got to be playing these games Why can't we just declare the main eligible for through season Let's just get this thing done Like it just like what what is what is the course trying to achieve here Greg as using your your law knowledge you know your the knowledge of the land here Greg why does it have to be like this Why can't it just be simple Yeah it it I don't know it's frustrating I'm sure for everyone that's involved in the process um well probably not so much for the NCAA Um look it's just silly at this point I think we've set all of the boundaries for moving forward next year Everybody stop wasting time stop wasting money make the kid eligible for the whole season You know you got these guys coming back from the NFL right I know it's only like 16 people but like just just make everyone eligible and then you just get right next year Just just be done with it save everyone time save everyone a headache Everyone can bitch about it on X like that's fine Let them have their their little safe space but let these guys just go play and then we're we're done in fresh next year I mean Ethan you uh you know I think I heard uh The Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach say hey I was curious why Les my are sorry why Lane Kippen was giving me a call But now I know why cause there's a tight end that got cut by the Buccaneers That was actually the Browns We have a we had the linebacker yeah we had the linebacker Yeah yeah yeah yeah well yeah so similar situation but not quite the same situation yeah correct But yeah so a linebacker that got cut from the Buccaneers going back to LSU and then also to a tight end from the Browns that's going back to LSU here But yet we're playing all these games here with with with K Tron Evans here Ethan I mean you know do you see the similarities Do you see it equal playing field here Ethan by the NCAA Well I don't want to be that guy but they're two completely different rules And I I think this is why like the 5 for 5 is now a thing and so that you don't have cases like K Tron Evans Now K Tron Evans is still kind of grandfather in and moving forward there won't be anymore But I mean I get what you're saying Like if you're playing preseason football yeah you shouldn't be going back to college But like what the players are saying and in their defense like if they had known this was an option they wouldn't have gone like they wouldn't assign They would have stayed in college And so I I don't know like I I I get both sides of it Like to me it should have just been there's no 2022 athletes being and being included like sorry you just missed out But clearly like those players have a case and lawyer and you know that they have this discussion So I I don't like K Tron Evans is completely unrelated to any of that So yeah uh obviously it's good for nice for state to have him have him back for now We'll see again if that changes but I don't really look at those two as comparable comparable situations And again this is like this is the thing right now and it's like it's been a storyline for August and probably for the next couple months in the basketball season but after that this is never gonna be a storyline again Everybody's just gonna be a five and that's that Yeah so they like this is this is a short like yes it's a mess Everything with the NCAA is a mess But once this blows over in the next couple months like the this will never be a talking point ever again And that's why I'm just saying just grant everybody like this is this let's let it let it go Everyone gets them all again they get their year and then we reset next year Like to me at this point you're so far into the process because there are a couple of state athletes and we'll get to them in the tweet of the week that are affected by the five and five um the 20 20 Two guys and two sports one of them being football And again I'm sure we'll get into it in a little bit but just just this make everyone eligible You get a year you get a year Oprah's happy We're all happy and we can get on with playing ball Oprah's always happy Oprah's Oprah's always happy Yeah there you go Yeah nope exactly It's just unfortunately like you said like like this this firefighter rule is going to fix everything but right now hold on not find wood Like right well just you know I mean just yeah I know I know it's it's all I want to challenge it though right now A lot of these issues we're experiencing right now will be hopefully solved But again it's into double a There's once this one gets fixed there's gonna be another issue that's gonna be that's gonna come out of it So but whatever Hey listen you know we could just as we always say we could just literally spend every single live show just just whining about the NCAA sub Alright let's jump into it here though Uh first of all Greg uh well I guess you know I guess I'll start with you Greg last time So Ethan I'll start with you here with this part So uh uh Greg I know that you highlighted to us and Ethan I wanna ask you about the captains that were announced uh for NC State this year Uh obviously starting off with Mr CJ Bailey Uh um you know and and first of all I thought was kind of interesting about how uh Dorn uh highlighted saying that he got this idea from hockey uh which I thought was funny Because he's he's always been a decent hockey follower I mean obviously having Rob Brendamore as a big fan who's the head coach of the Hurricanes And you know so I guess Ethan maybe it took the Carolina Hurricanes winning a Stanley Cup for Doring to finally say I like that I'm gonna incorporate that into my style when it comes to announcing captains Yeah it kind of reminded me of the office where it's like Dwight Schrute assistant to the assistant to the captain or assistant captain Which one is it Assistant to the assistant general manager Yeah right yeah our regional manager Yeah yeah yeah I mean yeah sure like sure it sounds it's all it's all good And well Dave's talked a lot He's really likes he really likes leadership on this team And um that's that's that's great that's great Like I don't think it will there's a way to define how that helps you win games You rather have it than not again does it translate into wins I don't know but um yeah it was it was good to see those guys recognized Yeah I Greg I just to kind of finish out the list here though So the captains are CJ Bailey Duke Scott papa Acquire Brian Nelson AJ Richardson assistant captains Keenan Jackson Cayman Smith and Isaiah Shirley I I I do gotta admit when I saw this list there was one name that really surprised me Actually I but do you do you have any like are we are we seeing eye to eye here Greg without us even have to say to each other or do you or did you not have a name that really stood out to you Um no I thought they were all good Um I mean it is it is interesting to see a first year guy get get you know be you know voted or elected a captain Uh so that's you know what with Popo I think that's really cool He's coming in you know set a standard and I I think you know people are falling in line with him in his in his way But no I thought the I thought list was fine Um it was was there someone that you thought that should have been on it wasn't on Is that what you're going with sir Oh no that was on that somebody that got put in assistant that I'm surprised wasn't a main captain That's Isaiah Shirley Oh Isaiah Shirley yeah no yeah I kind of thought that too But again like I don't know like I think I think everyone should be a captain in their own in their own way right like just kinda take accountability Um but no I I can see it you know yeah yeah again picking you know picking picking thornzy again just like just like Ethan said you know assistant to the regional manager like you know but else to like it definitely says a lot for Popo acquire for sure and the how much he has really bought in to the culture to NC State The fact that he got named not just a assistant to the regional manager captain but a actual captain of for the team So um and also too as well I mean the fact AJ Richardson like you know I think Ethan AJ Richardson has been a guy the entire offseason that that all of us have said is a guy That's kind of getting forgotten about When it comes to a guy that can really break out as a part of this the city state defense here Well and he was there last year Right like that's kind of where it's different from Aguire Sure so but yeah I mean look you bring in so many transfers You know some of them are gonna have to be captains I mean how many how many guys do you have that have like starters that have been in state their whole career I mean you have you have Jackson Vic Like he's the kind of the first one that comes to mind I like at least on the defensive side like Shirley like that's pretty much it The rest of them are are transfers unless you wanted to go with one of the young safeties Yeah yeah now and King Mac honestly would have been a name I would have loved to seen seen on here uh you know being you know his experience etc But again a guy like like we said a first year guy So you know I guess can I say read into that and say too much here But again huge shout out to Popo though for for forgetting the captain superstar And that makes sense Because you know he's the you know I'm sure he's gonna be the one that has the green dot on the back of his helmet right So he's gonna be a guy that you're looking for a lot from And and that just you know kind of just checks a box right for that that position And you want someone who's gonna be probably one of your vocal guys on defense being labeled as a captain I mean you saw it last year with Caden Fordham basically playing the same position Um so so to me that does make sense even with him being a first year guy Yeah agree Now I do want us kind of move to here a little bit Uh we won't spend too much time on this as we'll have a whole again uh NC State Brush Virginia preview uh later this week here uh which you do not wanna miss out on But I did wanna touch on on a couple things uh that Dorn said in his press conference First of all giving praise to Tony Elliot for for going 11 3 in his first season uh which you know I'm I'm I would have loved to have kind of you know poked at that a little bit and be like hey like one of his losses lost to us pretty cool Uh you know definitely like it And I I think said during last uh last week's uh season predictions here But you know how the win against Virginia I think at the time what not not think no I know at the time was not given the true roses that actually ended up being deserved here I so cool stuff there though Um but one things that they said was stood out was that both sides are figuring out what the new pieces are and adjusting as they go Um really for me that stood out because first of all I think it's really something that I don't think Ethan that we really talked about during the Virginia game where I truly do think this game is going to be honestly where coaching flexes its muscle uh because of the fact that both sides Virginia's coaching staff and our coach coach staff are not gonna truly be able to fully prepare or scout this team like they would any other team the season Why Because there has been no film on how empty states teamed offensive defense nor Virginia's team offensive defense had is truly gonna play together how things are truly gonna work from a system perspective like even having an idea of okay who's the guy like what's the split Is it you know a more of a run heavy or is it more of a pass heavy Um you know it's a guy that you know that officer loves to stretch the field etcetera Or you know take what what what's given to him etcetera So honestly this game is gonna be a game where halftime adjustments is gonna I think huge huge huge huge say the least for sure Uh so you know am I kind of reading into that a little bit too far Uh here Gregory you think that's a fair and you know an analysis for really predicting this game is gonna come down a ton to coaching Yeah again it's the first game of a season you know if you if you know anything you know nothing of what the first game is gonna look like uh especially with so many different pieces you know UVAs breaking and a brand new quarterback Um they've got some you know some injuries that sounds like some of those guys probably are good chance that they will be back Um you know just so many new weapons I mean look at states you know skill positions other than Duke Scott you you've got and Keenan Jackson Those are the only returning guys uh that that that will see significant action And so you have no idea what those guys are gonna give you Um you know it's really hard for you be a to expect some of that stuff right There's not a lot of stuff on tape for either side so yeah I think it will be come down to some coaching and you know some decision making and you know who's who's got enough to get it done at the end Yep Ethan what about you Do you do would you agree with Greg's analysis there on that on that yeah I mean coaching yeah I you know early on in season when you're when you're so um so reliant on the portal It it takes time like you're you're you're gonna start slow Um and I think we saw that um many I don't say many for many years but for a while right like takes takes time to kind of figure out who you're who you're going to I thought that was one of the reasons they won the game last year is because they had they had a quarterback who had played with his skill position guys And in Week 2 in a four point game I think that mattered You know I think CJ Bailey knew okay I need to go to this guy I need to go to that guy We had Hollywood smothers right at peak form you know Virginia Chandler Morris was good in that game but you know Bailey was just a little better And and that was kind of different So now both teams are kind of back at square one with what's around their quarterback and with what's on defense Um again Virginia's defense got a lot better down the stretch last year because they figure out who to play So I don't think you'll see either of these teams that at their best on Saturday Maybe that's like a captain obvious statement I don't know but yeah I like sure I I I think um you know having an idea of who you wanna go with and and and what to do and what situation It's certainly a game that you expect to be close certainly could be the difference Yeah just for fun here Ethan if if you were to put a bet on what the first play of the game would be you have a general guess on on what the first play will be Think it's gonna be Duke Scott run Maybe maybe a flea flicker first first play of the game Flea Flick flea flicker for the first game would be pretty uh pretty funny Um uh I'm kind of thinking Duke Scott run I also kind of thinking of maybe yeah yeah I was also kind of thinking maybe like an RPO but you know Bailey wasn't great at those last year though I don't know I'll go with a with a Duke Scott uh hand off Sounds like you agree Greg Yeah I just think something to get the team settled in If it if it's not a Duke Scott Scott run it's probably like a a line of scrimmage Like uh what do you call it Like a not it's not like a screen pass I guess it's like a bubble pass I think So they call it like a bubble screen I think I think that's what they're calling it I I look I'm not saying I agree with it but I think it's just something safe to get in You gotta get the guys in the rhythm right like go out and get hit for the first time And so I think it's gonna be a run or like a short you know very short pass um again just to kinda get the juices flowing Fans always love those bubble screens Whoa I think they hate him when it's like fucking 8 right I think that's when they hate him the most Like if you're doing it early downs I don't really have a have a problem with it cause it's basically just an extension of your run game So maybe you get like a Victor Scott out on the on a bubble screen and see if he can break something maybe something like that You know that'd be sweet Yeah uh cool Well uh so with that being said that we're gonna jump into here to uh hear more from our friend Mr Ethan Berry here under Ethan Statpack Let's do it Alrighty here Ethan what you got for us this week for Ethan Statpack man Yeah let's go back to last year's Virginia game Um I thought that was arguably I I I I don't I haven't I guess I haven't looked close enough Arguably CJ Bailey's best game in two years as NC States quarterback 16 23 200 yards which I know doesn't jump off the page But again it was only 23 attempts which was his his lowest on the year 200 yards one touchdown zero interceptions It was 8.7 yards per attempt He was aggressive throwing the ball down the field again as aggressive as he was all year at 9.57 area yards per attempt which is a you know a very loud number

His quarterback rating was a 1: 21:20

57 And then he ran very efficiently six times Obviously I don't believe he got sacked in that game So six true runs if that's accurate for 44 yards seven yards per carry uh again close to his best was a little better against UNC uh with a couple of touchdowns look as good as Virginia's defense was last year Like that's that's an excellent performance He scored 34 points 35 points I should say again I I would argue considering who you played I know you scored 48 against Georgia Tech You scored 42 against UNC 34 against White Forest Like this is a defense that ended in the top 20 I think on SV plus like this was a legitimately legitimately very good defense And I look at that and I say probably gonna need it again You know like this is kind of the game where you not not the game but one of a couple games where you need CJ Bailey to go out there And I I don't wanna say carry you to a win but be the best player on the field And look Hollywood Smothers was huge in that game I don't know if states gonna get a a Duke Scott type performance again hopefully Um but some others was unbelievable in that game The two of them were and so I yeah there's an element of you know you need CJ Bailey to be to be that good with new pieces around them against what it's what projects to be a very good defense And so can can he replicate those numbers you know again that probably expect him to throw more than 23 times But again smothers was so good in that game and say was so efficient He didn't need he didn't need to throw more than um that So again I I still look at last year's uh Virginia win as a really a great win

For instance um with the way it ended like defensively they got yes mothers was 17 for 1: 23:16

40 in that game eight yards per carry couple of touchdowns Um that was his best game of the year both of those guys right And that was kind of what it took That was how good Virginia was last year Like that was what you needed you needed every little bit of it So so yeah CJ Bailey 16 four uh 23 200 yards a touchdown uh 7 6 rushes excuse me for 44 yards and two touchdowns I think state's gonna need another performance similar to that to win on Saturday Yeah only other stat that I'm letting with an even tougher No go ahead Greg Oh I was safe If if you didn't pull a CJ Bailey stat I was like maybe you're gonna go third down get the hell off the field stat Uh that's somewhere where she has to be very good at but I I like the CJ Bailey stat I I just didn't realize how good he was Cause when you said his best performance I was like you're not going Georgia Tech here But then when you read it out I was like yeah that was that was a very efficient game Well and Virginia's defense was much better correct Yeah like like you know maybe the the Georgia Tech number 24 for 32 340 yards and two touchdowns much more gaudy yeah a little a little better but again he threw the ball 10 more times So yeah his numbers were better but again that Virginia defense was much much better than than the Georgia Tech defense I I'm glad you brought up the third downs Greg because that was the reason Virginia was in that game I thought state was the better team in that game Virginia was 13 of 19 on third downs and I don't have the third and long breakdown in front of me but just thinking back like that number it felt yeah it felt like they were like 10 for 10 on third and eight or longer especially the Boston long runs on third long Yeah I'm like come on man what are we doing Just what are we doing Sorry sorry Go ahead So it it felt like there's an element of like Chandler Moore's bailing them out in those situations And you know I don't expect perbula to be able to do that throwing them all Um at least I think this is a virgin I don't think I don't know if perbula can throw it all Maybe but I mean his numbers throwing in the SEC last year were not good Yeah I mean yeah like you said maybe maybe he gets there But yeah Virginia was 13 and 19 and state was only 1 of 7 I mean can you believe that state scored 35 points and converted one third now Yeah yeah and it was it was a weird game for sure Yeah so so we got uh Finley here in the chat saying score guest for Saturday Pack 28 UVA 17 And here's why I love this score First of all beating UVA on the road by double digits would be incredible for sure especially since right now NC States a six point underdog here I but also choose Well I like Kool Aid at that point Yeah yeah well they wouldn't be drinking the Kool Aid They be guzzling at that point for sure What But also to Miami like if we could hold UVA 17 points that's phenomenal Also to his wall 28 scoring 28 points is enough where I could say all right offense was obviously productive unless just that you have a pick six or or or or you know fumble fumble all the way back for touchdown something like that here But if the office score 28 points defense whole UVA 17 beating UVA under up by double digits here sign me up all day long That would be just like Greg said drinking the Kool Aid for sure no guzzling the Kool Aid at that point guzzling the Kool Aid Sorry Yes yeah cause everyone thinks they're being mistaken Yes drowning in Kool Aid Yeah I again I think everyone is just like if you go out and win the first game it's an ACC road win You know people get hyped for that and you get a bi week and you got Richmond coming into town You're like oh and then you know anyway won't don't wanna get ahead too far Now I am curious We were talking about you know our guy being eligible Uh Virginia was trying to bring back a couple of 50 year guys um that were that were good Um and some of them I think like at least one or two of them were on the defensive side if I remember the article correctly Um I haven't had a chance to check on them but like that would be that would be interesting to see you know how how they factor in this whole thing I think they might not be eligible based on like the ruling but I'm not sure where they uh filed So again we talked about it a couple weeks ago just depending on where you filed your case at whether or not you're still active on a roster or not which is to me is wild Like because you filed in this state they've ruled on that one but the other ones they have it And so now you could potentially still be eligible And anyway I don't want to go back to that conversation I already have PTSD from it I mean we gotta bring up Jamal Johnson right Right yeah he was on my tweets of the week but yeah okay he's one too All right Yeah no no we'll save it for tweets of the week Yeah uh but yeah no So again definitely uh you know I'm sure UV is looking for it because they really do need some more seniors Belton 2 as well Tanner Ingle Dylan McMahon even Brandy Cleveland still holding on here at the Raiders too as well So you know which you know if the Raiders looking for another backup running back you know I'm sure Brandon Cleveland would be happy to offer his services and give what he give what he can At least more of a fullback you know ask probably nestlely than a full on shifty running back But I don't know uh here Uh so I mean obviously Greg we know where you stand in terms of who who you're you know have your chips all in for uh for for Kade Forum here But Ethan is there a guy of of this bunch here that you feel like has has a really good chance of making a 53 man roster here I mean Devon Marshall's the guy I've been pounding the drum for um with Jaguars right is that right Yeah with the Jags Yeah um so again like he was only in college for four years Like if he didn't have a chance to make the team I think he would probably be discussing him as a possibility to return If not in Sea State maybe somewhere else Um so yeah again I I can't sit here and tell you all about the Jaguars quarterback death chart death chart But I'm disappointed I I've seen some buzz on it I I was a fan of his and um yeah uh I'll see what they're saying on Twitter about him Um well so he got placed on IR today Did you guys know that Who Devon Marshall Oh no I didn't know that Okay bummer Well he'll probably get an injury settlement yeah injury designation Yeah yeah well it was him Sorry I don't mean to laugh at that because no one wants to laugh at just the oh if I had just been five minutes before the show to see how yeah well yeah I mean it wasn't it wasn't really big news so I don't feel that bad But yeah uh who are the who are some of the other guy I mean Fordham you tell me about Fordham Greg Yeah Fordham had a really good game He uh second on the team and tackles uh this past weekend again You know we all know he's a tackling machine I think he's gotten 10 tackles on the preseason His first game he only had one but again I didn't watch the game so I don't know how much playing time he got This one definitely sounded like he had more playing time Uh but he had uh like I said he's up to 10 total tackles I think seven or eight are on or solo tackles Um think he might even have a tackle for loss in there Um but yeah he's got a chance They actually waved a guy that was at linebacker earlier Um and then the one guy that had two 2 sacks in a game is the one of the ones that are going back to LSU So like okay there's two guys off the depth chart that he just moved up So maybe maybe he gets there You know if nothing else you know come back as a practice squad guy and you know try to work his way from there Yeah uh one other uh name 2 as well which is uh uh I was also fighting uh to get back from Myers Aki Quanu 2 as well with a torn patellar tendon 2 as well which uh poor icky man He just can't stay healthy man He just it's it's it's been a tough career for sure in terms of staying healthy and uh unfortunately hasn't played that say the best either in his career But still you know he's you know it still seems like for sure that that the Panthers are still all for him and wanting him back ASAP for sure Um so you know I I mean he's gonna come back from the injury that's a big injury that's a big injury especially when it happened in the playoffs too So it was late in the season right so he may not be ready to go beginning but another name too as well uh that's interesting name again we we brought this up Uh I believe it was last week but Jordan Waters as well uh with the Rams uh battling for that RB three spot between him Uh and dark was hunter So uh and Jordan Wires The guy was really impressive again Five carries 37 yards and the Week 2 performance So you know we'll see uh you know goes back to you dude You know which I I I'd be shocked if you mention as you stay especially since we basically you know bench down but definitely took a big step back for Hollywood's mother's late and 2024 season here But you know it's you know definitely either way still excited for waters And and and hopefully we can have more pack pros to celebrate here Like she definitely he definitely enjoyed it He was at a tailgate last year so I mean he doesn't like dislike the no but just spent four years of Duke You know so you know but yep have you spent on Centennial Uh me a ton uh yeah we I I actually stayed uh at even Ferry Hall my first two years Uh and then I actually spent the next two years since I was a football equipment manager I was able to get into college and and so you're right between main campus and Centennial Campus so just a quick little bus ride over And you know just it was just kind of given that if you needed help studying or help you know working together on some homework that you were gonna find some classmates at Centennial but also to man uh uh hunt Library holy smokes If if first of all if if you're listening to this or watching this and you have not gone and checked out Hunt Library Man you're missing out I've gone for the ice cream Well that well well that you can get on main campus or beating Elon last night 2 to 1 again I mean like we've said you know women's soccer is a is a team that you know definitely had you know a couple of strong years six seven years ago when they were made to a couple Sweet sixteens but haven't really been able to to get back to that strength since But as of right now like you know for again for no for the first time since 2013 Greg can't can't argue with that and say hey I think men state women's soccer is maybe starting to to turn an edge here this season I mean you can only play the games that you've played right And you can only win those games So they've done that They've gone out and handle their business the first couple of games Uh the season will start getting a little bit tougher as we get into this Um but yeah good especially results yeah absolutely ACC Um but yeah I think you know they've this was the closest game they had so far The other ones have been a little bit more of of you know um I want color blowout but I I don't follow enough soccer to go Like I guess 4 to 1 is a blowout right I feel like that would be a blowout but um but yeah I I think this is good and um just go keep stacking wins I think last year they had a couple opportunities where they could have made some impressive wins They just didn't quite get it done And so you hope that this is the year that they take that next step Yeah what you gonna cook Head coach Carrie Higgins is only his second season in Sea State Uh but you know once again uh you know get get your your players into the system establish that culture and you know you start to see some some some wins and and and production from it And so again four and a first time since 2013 huge shout out here to instate women's soccer uh to start season here four and a uh now in other news here men's soccer here pulled off uh come from behind uh win uh beating Queen's University 2 to 1 last night uh which you know being No 2 in the country here Ethan and uh uh getting a 0 0 draw versus UNC Charlotte could be a little bit concerning But when you look at the ACC in general which there's been a couple of pretty big upsets in the ACC specifically here uh you know like we said like even you said Ethan uh here to uh to uh fantasy football where where the draft isn't what Windsor loses It's the waiver wire It like it's it's not it's not the beginning of the season that that Windsor loses you in AC championship or national championship It's you know really what comes from this And you know it's coach Mark Hubbard had replaced a couple of really key players from last season obviously including Donovan Phillips which was the basically player of the year last year for for for college men soccer And you know so you know even two as well like we uh I guess I don't know if it's part of the week by getting a player back basically right before the season even started and drew love We'll talk about it we'll talk about it well but anyway so so Ethan so talk to me a little bit here about or talk to the instant fans here a little bit about you know what's the worry meter at you know after a 0 0 draw versus you and see Charlotte in a 2 1 come from behind hold on it was coastal sorry Coastal Coastal Canada Let me play Charlotte that day Yeah you're good Yeah yeah the other C team that's green Yes Ethan give us your worry meter Yeah I I don't I like it's definitely not the start You dream of being No 2 in the country right And the season is not super long either Like I think this is kind of the thing you remember about college sports in general like yeah and you know your non conference play isn't very long So I I don't know like I I don't think you're at the point of worrying um but maybe you fidget in your chair a little bit be like yeah I don't know you know a little uneasy now I didn't I didn't really like that especially against I mean it get like I'm not gonna sit here and tell you I know exactly how good coastal and Queens are but I'm guessing they're like not tournament teams I I don't know enough I I I don't know I I I again can't sit here and tell you for sure one way or another We know you and CG is very good We know they aren't ACC teams Um so yeah I mean again a little bit of a slow start but it is one of those things where when you bring in a ton of transfers which is what they did And they rebuilt their entire roster and we'll get to it They got guys in and out of the in and out right now You know it can kind of make some sense that way So I I don't know I like on the flip side I am kind of a believer that a lot of times you see in in game what you see in Game 1 is foreshadowing for what you'll what you're gonna see over the course of the season So I don't know like both sides of the fence certainly not time to panic But I think you you probably hope to be a little bit more a little bit more dominant at the end of the day Final thing I'll say on it I I do believe that the Hubbard hangs his head on defense and I mean you've only given up one goal in two games So I I think if you're looking for an optimistic side I I certainly think you feel good about the way the way they're defending right now Ethan additional oh sorry Greg any additional thoughts here on men soccer No they really don't think uh Ethan pretty much had a lot of that stuff Uh and he mentioned guys in and out of the lineup I do know that um in one of the interviews I don't remember I think it was after the coastal game in between these two games that Coach Albert mentioned that they're dealing with some serious um and some injuries right now Um even the women are dealing some injuries with especially at the goalkeeping Um so you know some of that can be be attributed to it But yeah I think you'll get your legs here Probably the next you know week or two once you start really fill out what you're what you're doing and then you guys you're grooving and and then you'll probably you'll probably be just fine again It's just early season worries were state fans We like 2 to 1 Queens Oh my gosh we're not the same team I think we'll be fine yeah agreed Uh but speaking of though you had already mentioned to here Greg here But uh no If I should be coming out here to uh talking about a ruling that came out here regarding two specifically in state athletes that returned for a fifth year right so we I know Ethan kind of mentioned Jamal Jamil Johnson with regards to football and then Drew Lovelace Now that's one the Lovelace one kind of stings a little bit because we did have a guy leave the program Um Ali Gotford uh the guy that we brought over from England Uh he left the program right around when this initial announcement was made And now if he doesn't love voice correctly right correct yeah that was that was what was alluded to at least in some of the tweets that I read Um so you don't have now You've basically lost two players uh potentially uh with that with that Um and so this was the court case out in Colorado where the judge had to kinda re rephrase her ruling Um so there was a stay on that Right now obviously that will be appealed and we'll see like who knows the timetable on when all this will be going through Noah also talked about here that then Alan Lubin's not affected this because again we talked about this as well depends on what court and what state you filed this in You're good still for now Obviously that will be heard at some point here in the near future So we're not clearly out of the woods yet Would Van Allen Lubin Um but right now we do have a little bit of stinger here with Lovelace and soccer and Jamil Johnson in football Uh Ethan uh how big uh you know is it for in state football If they can uh you know I think we already talked a little bit about in terms of Jamal but just any additional kind of thoughts here on the impact that this this could bring Yeah I I mean look you'd rather have Jamal Johnson than not um I I certainly think that's the case Uh but I I like I don't know that he would have started at at this point um least not weak ones yeah not Week 1 Like maybe maybe further down the road he's able to work into it but I think state likes Jared some small I think they like your guy Andre Evans like some of the younger guys And you know would you rather have Jamal Johnson in Week 1 Ready to go Yeah but he joined you halfway through fall camp he's in and out like but with these rulings you just don't know So my expectations for him like you know my thing with all these football guys you know if they've been if they've been uh you know in a camp then then they're in shape But if they haven't been playing pro ball you don't even know if they're in football shape So you you you really have no idea Obviously if you're taking them onto the roster you figure they are but so I I don't know Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 yeah makes sense And and against Virginia you know you have you have some time to figure it out after Virginia but you know this is one of your biggest games of the year right out of the shoot So you certainly would rather have him Um you know would I be surprised at the others Yeah yeah so there's no harm in adding him like he's he's at minimum like a rotational piece depth You're gonna have injuries you're gonna have a crazy targeting call at some point during the season um where you're gonna you're gonna need guys so you'd rather have them than not I don't feel like this is any sort of of deal breaker or anything like that at this point yeah agree there Uh it's lies real we have finally gotten that fourth piece here Ethan And so what was your initial reaction when you saw Murray State pop up here as the NC State's first opponent here in the Bahama Hoops Championship Disappointed Um yeah I mean torvic has them outside of the top 100 Like I don't think this is a great you know tournament cause the other teams are what Seton Hall who's currently 76th in Wisconsin I wanna say is yeah uh Wisconsin where are you Wisconsin Haha uh oh 48 okay yeah yeah which it's not great Like and if you play Wisconsin like okay but right I mean there's a chance you there's no guarantee like there's a chance you get out of here without a quad 1 game which I think is a bummer to be in this sort of tournament Um so I get like states going in as the best team for whatever that's worth They went into Maui as the best team last year too So yeah uh you know again I I I don't know like for for a tournament like this I I I don't wanna say I had higher expectations but I hoped that there would be um a little more I had heard New Mexico potentially was a possibility in the spot so I feel like that would have been an upgrade So I don't know like not super beneficial for your resume this point Yeah no I had heard the New Mexico thing as well and you're right like you're going away the Bahamas you at least you know I know it's like it's a it's a two parter right Go down get some team chemistry some team bonding you know enjoy the sun you know those type of things But you it is still a business trip and you wanted to be a beneficial one And if you're not coming back you like who cares I don't want to say who cares but you know if you're if you're coming home with a with a piece of hardware or if you're winning against quality teams like I think you want the quality teams over the hardware And it's just you know when you're playing on neutral courts that's your opportunity to get some get some juice because again they're weighted differently than a home game And so if you're gonna go play neutral site games you kind of want the opponent to kind of match the match the the the the value if you will And this just kinda seems kinda lame I'm not gonna like shirt code it Um but it's really hard when you're trying to fill out a a a last roster or a last entry spot into a tournament a month and a half before the season starts Like most teams already have their schedules filled out and so you're really just trying to find a guy and it feels like hey all right we'll take you we'll swipe right there Murray State welcome to the tournament Is that how then this year the slight stinks and the same thing in basketball you've seen it in baseball where it's like you know some some weeks some years you get three great teams at home and then other years you you don't even play a tournament team at home But the prices don't reflect it right like the price they're not they're not they're not gonna take they're not gonna deduct $200 from your season ticket package because you're not bringing in a quality opponent Like they don't dynamic right thing huh yeah dynamic pricing Yeah thank you that was what I was trying to think of Yeah that would be wonderful I think you get more people hyped up Um but then look a lot of people have like go ahead go ahead I've been talking I didn't mean to cut you off but that's why not copper scheduling is important like you can control that You can't control who the ACC gives you in any sport You can control you know I don't wanna complain about Elliot It's nonconference scheduling right now You can control like you can control who you play you know last year you played VCU at home Okay great go get another one of those games especially if you're not gonna play VCU on the road or go play them on the road Oh wait yeah right yeah yeah no I mean yeah if you're going to expect fans to shell out big dollars because that's what it becomes especially fans that have multiple season tickets of multiple sports um you you got it you gotta entice them you got it you gotta dangle that carrot in front of them and make it make it worth their while Um because it's it's bad enough that you're paying heck I I mean freaking basketball tickets are the most expensive season ticket to hold Um and and so you're you know you're having what is it uh like 18 20 home games something like that Um you know and you gotta pay for parking you know if you want a beer or a hot dog at the game because you know those aren't you know nice easy prices It's just you're starting to you're starting to up price people and guess what guys it's only gonna get worse like so do you have to figure this out You have to you know you have to make it worth where people don't wanna sit at home on their 65 inch 75 inch TV drink all the beer they want and don't have to pay parking to park in their in their garage Yeah good point so we're gonna shake that my gears So Greg you mentioned earlier want to talk about the targeting here So so what you got for us there Yeah I was just curious you guys know that there's like a new targeting rule this year Did you guys hear about this No it's yeah so what do you mean We're just where where now that the if you get targeting it doesn't carry over correct Yeah if you get targeting the second half of a game it you don't have to set up the first half of the next game which is not good Oh and then unless you already have you're out of the rest of the game correct Yes you're still you're still done for the you're still dqed for that game now you will have to pay the penalty for the carry over if it's your second or more targeting So thankfully tannering glow is no longer on the team Yeah yeah anyway and there's some other ones We can maybe talk about it here and like there's two Like there's people who are chronically online like us and then there's the people who aren't So I think you probably get two different answers from those groups of people I put a poll up on Twitter a couple weeks ago said hey if you know the question was eight and four not nine and three yeah and 16 of people said yes they would take it at 8 and four which I get it Like to me the case would be okay you've won eight or nine games so many times I would just rather take my chances to get more than that And if I end up with six or seven then whatever you know and I definitely get that part of it yeah again just was CJ coming back with the schedule the way it is with the fact that don't wanna Vegas says 8 and 4 though I well yes but again it's like we said like like like like like we just Vegas doesn't care about the fact that this is Doran's 14th season or sorry Yes they definitely consideration and he hasn't been to AC Championship game Like Vegas doesn't care about that but in state fans do I feel like they take I I I would Do you think they take in that kind of consideration into those type of things when they're creating odds like historical No now it's purely on the ear straight up I don't gamble so I don't know Yeah I mean like there's a little bit of returning production but I don't think it's like I don't think it's like oh well they won nine games football and so I think it's just State fans or fans in general I don't have to just lump state into this or I can I guess like people just have unrealistic expectations Sometimes they expect like the second coming of whatever college football team has been a dominant team over the last 50 years and go That's what we should be but again when I we talk historically NC State has not been that So why are we thinking that this year is any different than the previous 39 years since we've won anything you know what I mean Like and again like if we go eight and four Travesty's aside um or 9 and three I think that's a it's successful like again you know if you're if you're the guy at work that you know is trying to get a promotion or get a pay raise like that's gonna get you and it's above average right You're gonna probably get a 3 4 five percent pay raise with 8 and 4 I get it it's a horrible analogy but it's late day So Greg just to make your point for you there was a coach that just seven years ago won a national championship of football and put together probably the greatest football college football team in the history of college football And two years later was it was out of a job I'll take Edos Ron for$500 indeed Edos Ron And so again like I get it it's LSU it's a little bit of a different standard It's a different yeah but no but still the points made yeah the points Don't hate like dude that guy just won you a national championship undefeated season put together greatest roster in the history college football And two years later you said nope I'm good Pieces will pay
